Is too much Hand Sanitizer bad for you?
How much is too much?
I clean my hands meticulously as I can't stand having dirty or sticky hands. I don't even really like wearing gloves and pen on hands is a definite no no for me. Particularly at work, as I work with optical glasses and they can be surprisingly gross and dirty. I wash my hands a lot, and then once I've dried my hands, I use hand sanitizer [Because I don't trust the towels, in case someone has wiped dirty frames with them] I also carry hand sanitizer in my hand bag and use it at home some times.
Is it bad for your skin to use it so much?
Hand sanitizers contain what are known as biocides, strong chemicals which kill bacteria and viruses but in large amounts can be irritant to the skin and remove our own beneficial bacteria present on the dermis, which naturally helps to protect the skin from bacteria. Another issue worth thinking about is the increased use of hand sanitizers actually increases the chances of bacteria and virus becoming immune to the biocides, increasing the risk of virus to our immune systems and eventually rendering the sanitizers pretty useless and . Excessive use of hand sanitizers can also aggravate and irritate existing cuts and scrapes, causing them to take longer to heal.
Lots of hand sanitizers are made from at least 60% - 90% alcohol and there have been documented cases of poisoning on ingestion with small children where the bright colours and scents make them more attractive to use. The alcohol content also makes them highly flammable.
Regularly washing of your hands with soap and water seems adequate for your profession. Washing your hands regularly is a healthier way to keep them clean - hand sanitizer will be ineffective at keeping your hands clean if your hands are not washed with soap and water regularly.
It may be worthwhile thinking about why you feel you feel so afraid of, and feel the need to be 'protected' from, germs and bacteria and why you are over zealous with the use of sanitizer.
